How We Built a Website That Feels Like a Night at Breathing Trees Camp

Breathing Trees Camp is a private glampground in Boulder Creek, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, near Big Basin State Park. People find the site when they’re planning a trip. It has to give them a sense of the place and then make it easy to book.

We worked with Sleepless Media, a Santa Cruz County agency that builds sites for outdoor and travel brands, to put it together.

Start with the stays

We have three different places to sleep: The Fuselage (a small Scandinavian-style cabin), The Tree Tent (a treehouse 25 feet up in the redwoods), and a 2020 Airstream Globetrotter. They attract different people, so each one has its own page. A guest deciding between a cabin and a treehouse is picking an experience. The site has to show the difference instead of just listing rooms.

Keep the path to booking short

Every stay page has a clear “Learn More & Book” link. A banner at the top points to whatever we’re currently taking reservations for. The idea is that someone who likes the Tree Tent shouldn’t have to look around for the next step.

Answer the questions people already have

Travel sites work better when they cover the stuff guests wonder about before they book. What’s nearby? Can we have a wedding here? What does a stay actually feel like? We have sections for things to do (hiking, surfing, wineries, mountain biking), weddings, and this blog so the site is useful for someone still looking around, not only for someone ready to reserve.

Why we used a local agency

We wanted a team that knew both Shopify and outdoor/travel brands, and that could come see the property. Sleepless Media has built sites for outdoor and travel companies for a long time. It showed up in the questions they asked about our guests. If you run a camp, lodge, or any outdoor brand and you’re thinking about a new site, their outdoor work is a reasonable place to look.

What to look for in a travel website

If you’re building or rebuilding a site for a stay or an outdoor brand, these are the things we’d put first:

  • One page per type of stay or trip.
  • A clear next step on every page, not just the homepage.
  • Content that answers real questions (things to do, how to get there, what to expect).
  • A builder who understands how outdoor and travel customers browse.
